  1. The Red Sox complete their sweep of the A’s, winning 7-4 yesterday afternoon in comeback fashion.
    • BOS: Scored 7 8th inning runs after being down 4-0 going into the inning.
    • R. Castillo: 2 RBI in 8th (Solo HR, RBI single) to begin and end rally.
    • X. Bogaerts: GW 2-RBI double (Ramirez and Betts scored)
    • BOS: First sweep of the season, 5-2 in last 7 games.
  2. The Bruins reportedly told F Carl Soderberg that it is “unlikely” that the team will sign him for the 2015-16 season.
  3. Patriots LB Brandon Spikes allegedly tied to a hit-and-run early Sunday Morning on Rt. 495 near Wrentham and N. Attleboro (Exit 14).
    • MA State Police reportedly to an OnStar call for a car hit by a deer but upon arrival they found no driver nor deer but found that the car is registered to Brandon Spikes.
    • MA State Police would later respond to a car who was “rear ended” by unknown driver who took off. Police are investigating whether the events are related.

  1. The Warriors battle back to force yet another OT game with the Cavs, but Cleveland would hold on and win 95-93 to even the series at 1-1.
    • S. Curry: missed GW shot with seconds left in OT.
  2. No. 8 Stan Wawrinka upsets No. 1 Novak Djokovic to win the French open in tennis.
  3. Group B of the Women’s World Cup began pool play as Norway beat Thailand 4-0 and Germany destroys Ivory Coast 10-0.

  1. American Pharaoh and jockey Victor Espinoza claimed the first Triple Crown since 1978 (Affirmed).
    • V. Espinoza: Record 3rd attempt at Triple Crown (War Emblem 2002, California Chrome 2014), will reportedly donate all proceeds to charity.
    • Bob Baffert: Record 4th horse to be running for the Triple Crown (Silver Charm 1997, War Emblem 2002, California Chrome 2014)
  2. Tampa Bay levels the Stanley Cup Finals at 1-1 with their 4-3 win over Chicago Saturday night.
  3. The Cavs lose PG Kyrie Irving for the rest of the season has he will undergo knee surgery to correct a fractured kneecap.
    • Irving left Game 1 of the NBA Finals in OT.
  4. The Women’s World Cup began Saturday as host-team Canada beat China 1-0 and the Netherlands beat New Zealand 1-0 in Group A.
  5. Tanya Carpenter, the woman who was hit by a bat in the head area at Fenway Park, remains in serious condition according to family.

  1. The Stanley Cup Finals moves to Chicago as the Blackhawks host the Lightning in Game 3 at 8 PM.
    • Series tied 1-1.

    • TB: 7-3 on the road this postseason.
  2. The USWNT faces Australia in the Women’s World Cup at 7:30 PM  in Group D.

Hometown Highlights:

  • Wade Miley leads the Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Rangers.
    • Miley: 7.0 IP, 7 SO, 2 ER
    • Ortiz (6) & Napoli (4) HR each.
    • Red Sox: 13 hits, 8 batters with at least 1 hit.
    • Pablo Sandoval had to leave the game and had to be helped off in the 7th, after taking a 94 mph fastball off his knee.
  • Robert Kraft announced that the Patriots would “reluctantly” accept the Deflategate punishments of 2 lost draft picks (2015 1st, 2016 4th) and the $1 million fine.
    • This does not affect Tom Brady’s appeal process.

Around the Nation:

  1. The Minnesota Timberwolves win the1st pick in the NBA Draft lottery, their highest pick in team history.
    • Rest of Draft: 2. Lakers, 3. 76ers, 4. Knicks, 5. Magic, 6. Kings, 7. Nuggets, 8. Pistons, 9. Hornets, 10. Heat.
  2. The Warriors overcome a 16pt deficit and take Game 1 from the Rockets, winning 110-106.
  3. The Blackhawks level the series at 1-1 with the Ducks, winning a triple OT thriller 3-2 in Game 2 of the WCF.
  4. The NFL voted to change the placement of the PAT to the 15 yd line.
    • Defenders can also now return intercepted, fumbled, or blocked 2-pt attempts to score 2 pts for themselves.
    • Rule is only in place for 2015 season, will be voted on for renewal in 2016.

  1. Joe Kelly (1-2, 5.58 ERA) takes the mound for Boston as the Sox face Phil Klein (0-0, 7.71 ERA) and Texas at 7 PM.
  2. LeBron James and the Cavaliers face off against Al Horford and the Hawks as the ECF begins in Atlanta at 8:30 PM.
  3. The Lightning look to take another game from the Rangers as the two teams face off in Game 3 of the ECF.

Hometown Highlights:

  1. The Red Sox traveled back to Boston today to prep for their series with the Rangers and Angels.
  2. The Red Sox outright OF Allen Craig to Triple-A Pawtucket, a week after optioning him to the same club.
    • Craig passed waivers and now is likely to remain with Pawtucket until he is traded.
  3. The Patriots announced the signing of LB Brandon Spikes.
    • The deal is for 1-year.
    • Patriots also released CB Chimdi Chekwa, LB Cameron Gordon, and QB Devin Gardner.
  4. Celtics G Marcus Smart was named to the All-Rookie second team.

Around the Nation: 

  1. Tampa Bay levels the series with New York, winning Game 2 of the ECF 6-2.
  2. The Miami Marlins hire their GM Dan Jennings as their new manager.

Today’s Buzz:

Weekend Wrap-up May 15th – May 17th

Hometown Highlights:

  1. The Red Sox lose 2-1 to the Mariners (May 15th) but won 4-2 in the next game (May 16th).
    • May 16th: Buchholz pitched extraordinarily well going 8 IP 1 ER and striking out 11 batters. That’s actually Ace-like.
      • The loss should have fallen on John Farrell after he chose to have Layne not walk Nelson Cruz in the 9th.
        • Cruz would drive in the winning run off a single to left.
    • May 17th: Rick Porcello out-pitched King Felix, who may have aggravated his ankle injury.
      • Despite allowing 2 HRs from Brad Miller, Porcello was lights out going 6.2 IP 2 ER 6 SO.
      • Pablo Sandoval (5) and Ortiz (5) each hit a HR off King Felix (6 IP, 4 ER, 5 SO), who received his first L on the year.
  2. Tom Brady and the NFLPA are still trying to get Roger Goodell to recuse himself as arbitrator for Brady’s suspension appeal.
  3. The Celtics reportedly have interviewed Kentucky C Willie Cauley-Stein and show moderate interest in him.
  4. Paul Pierce is debating retirement after his Washington Wizards were eliminated Friday.
    • I’m not a betting man but I can assure you Pierce will retire a Celtic, whether it’s an one-day or (less likely) an one-year contract.
  5. The Revolution play to a 1-1 tie versus Toronto FC (May 16th).
    • USMNT members Juan Agudelo (32′) [NE] and Michael Bradley (53′) [TOR] found the nets for their respective teams.

  1. #1 seeds Atlanta and Golden State eliminated Washington and Memphis respectively from the NBA Playoffs on Friday.
  2. The NY Rangers took Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals from the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 (May 16th).
  3. American Pharoah wins the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown taking The Preakness handedly despite the rainstorm.
    • AP is the third favorite to win the Preakness from the rail since 1950, no horse had won in that position since 1994.
    • AP and jockey Victor Espinoza will be the 14th pair to try and be the 1st to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed won it in 1978.
  4. Steven Gerrard played his last English Premier League game Saturday, but his Liverpool team lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace.

Today’s Buzz: 

  1. The Red Sox and Mariners wrap up their 4-game series this afternoon at 4:10 PM.
    • Steven Wright (1-0, 4.22 ERA) takes the mound for the Red Sox in place of Justin Masterson (15-day DL, fatigue) against James Paxton (1-2, 4.31 ERA).
  2. The Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks face-off in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals today at 3 PM.
  3. The LA Clippers and Houston Rockets will play a Game 7 to decide who moves on and who goes home.
    • Tip-off at 3:30 PM (Winner plays GS).
  4. The Wells Fargo Championship wraps up today.
  5. Rory McIlroy is the leader at -18. Webb Simpson (-14) and Robert Streib (-11) trail in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Hometown Highlights:

  1. The Red Sox avoided a series sweep, beating Toronto 6-3.
    • Clay Buchholz gets the W going 6.1 IP 3 ER 3 SO.
    • Pablo Sandoval and Mike Napoli both hit their 3rd HR of the season.
    • Boston ends their 3 game losing streak (2-7 in last 9 games)
  2. Red Sox RF Allen Craig was officially designated to Triple-A Pawtucket.
  3. Red Sox trade RP Edward Mujica to Oakland for a player to be named later.
  4. The Patriots have just signed TE Fred Davis to a 1-year deal.
    • Davis was a former Redskin who was suspended by the league for substance-abuse.

Around the Nation:

  1. LeBron James sinks a game winner to lift Cleveland over Chicago 86-84 in Game 4.
    • Series tied 2-2.
    • LeBron also faked an ankle injury but I guess we are choosing to ignore that.
  2. The Rangers narrowly survive the Capitals comeback, winning 4-3 and forcing a Game 7.
    • The last 12 playoff games the Rangers have played in have been decided by 1-goal (dating back to last season).
      • Rangers led 4-1 at one point.
    • Kreider (2), Nash, and Boyle all scored for NY.
    • Chimera, Ward, Kuznetsov scored for the Caps.
  3. Anaheim eliminated Calgary from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning 3-2 in overtime.
    • ANA wins series 4-1.
    • J. Gaudreau and J. Hudler scored for CGY.
    • R. Kesler, C. Perry, M. Beleskey scored for ANA.
      • Perry scored game winner after having to leave game after a collision with CGY player.
      • Beleskey scored in all 5 games in the series.
  4. The Clippers bully the Rockets in Game 4 winning 128-95.
    • LAC leads series 3-1.
    • DeAndre Jordan led all scorers with 26 pts (14 of which were FT, has taken 128 FT attempts this postseason).
  5. Rickey Fowler (-12) wins the Players Championship after winning a three-man putt-off.

  1. Washington looks to increase its series lead over Atlanta at 7 PM
    • WSH leads series 2-1.
  2. The Warriors look to even their series with Memphis at 9:30 PM
    • MEM leads series 2-1.
  3. Rick Porcello eyes his 3rd straight win as the Red Sox travel to Oakland to take on the A’s at 10 PM
