Bye Bye Chiarelli

While everything was happening during the Aaron Hernandez trial the Bruins dropped an absolute bomb on us by announcing they have fired Peter Chiarelli and all of Boston had a sigh of relief. Many people came after Chiarelli’s job after the Bruins had the worst season in recent memory.

Chiarelli wasn’t all bad to this team I mean he was here for 9 years.  When he got here this team was a shit show and people didn’t know if the Bruins would be the same again. Chiarelli came in and turned everything around and made the playoffs seven years straight including 2 Eastern Conference Finals, a Presidents Trophy, and of course a Stanley Cup in 2011. For that we can say Thanks

But ever since the Bruins went to the cup 2 years ago things haven’t been the same. It has been an utter disaster. Some may say it goes back even further to when they won the cup. Chiarelli became to dependent on the third and fourth line guys. He was way over paying Campbell, Kelly, and Paille, which in turn made the salary cap nothing but a disaster making him move Sequin and Boychuck two young players who could have made a difference for this team. Peter could not draft players for the life of him. The only good pick we had was Sequin and you thought he didn’t fit here? Insanity. Another big question was the head coach did Chiarelli keep Claude here for to long? Claude tried to keep the ‘Big Bad Bruins’ but in reality the league is moving in a different direction. If the Bruins are going to want to compete in this league they are going to need some top goal scorers.

The future of the bruins is in question, the future is sketchy and questionable. Who’s going to be the new GM? Will Claude be here?

Breaking down the Bruins season

The Boston Bruins have missed the playoffs for the first time since 06-07. That actually hurt to type. Who is to blame for the meltdown? Let’s break it down the year.

To start, the Boychuk trade was a disaster. The guy was our #2 defenceman (Dougie was #1, Chara lost that title) and we trade him to a conference powerhouse for some draft picks. Then we go ahead and use those draft picks to bring in Max Talbot and Brett Connolly. Yikes. Some people liked the trade since it freed up some cap space but in reality it was the wrong move. With Boychuk gone Tuukka lost a huge presence in front of him. Bart couldn’t handle the job, Z isn’t the same Z, and Miller couldn’t stay healthy. Meanwhile, Krejci was playing with hospital bands around his wrists the entire year. With little to no consistency game to game the Bs struggled to keep a grip on a wild card spot all year.

So who’s to blame? My votes for Chiarelli. Petey laid on his back the entire off-season and throughout the trade deadline first allowing Iggy, a 30 goal scorer, to walk and not signing any replacement for him, trading Boychuk, and then not bringing in any sort of help when we needed it during the trade period. He needs to go. He dealt Claude a shit hand all year and Claude had to try and salvage the season with it. He also dealt away Seguin who lit it up in Dallas this year. I get that Seguin didn’t show up for the playoffs and probably cost us the Cup (and maybe was plowing Horton’s wife at the time) but the kid was a geno machine, something we don’t have. We need a fresh start and a GM who can bring in and develop young talent. Unfortunately given today’s presser from Claude and Pete it sounds like he’s staying. And he’s not bringing back Soupy and Paille.

So what do we need? The answer is simple. We need a goal machine to stay competitive. If it means sending Big Z or Looch away to bring in one then I’m all in. We just don’t have that go to guy who can light the lamp on a consistent basis. Sure Pasta and Spooner will get better but we need that offensive impact player if we have any hope of bringing back the Cup. We still have the best two-way forward in the league in Bergeron, but he needs help. While we are at it, we should probably bring in some defensive help for Tuukka so he doesn’t have to face a billion shots per game.

But hey we have a 1% chance at the number 1 pick this year so we got that going for us right now.
