Patriots Release Chekwa, Sign Spikes

It seems that the New England Patriots are not yet done fixing their roster, as the Patriots made a pair of moves this morning. First, New England announced that they released cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, who signed with the team on March 11th from Oakland. Chekwa was a part of the Patriots for all of two months.

This is obviously a head-scratching move from a fan’s perspective. Are Kraft and the New England brass too busy discussing deflated balls to realize that the Patriots need major help at cornerback? As of right now, the New England cornerbacks are Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, Bradley Fletcher, and Nate Ebner. Although Butler is now known worldwide as the Super Bowl hero, Ryan has been inconsistent the past two years with the Pats, and Fletcher and Ebner simply do not have a lot of experience. Ever since star cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner went to the Jets and Saints, respectively, the Patriots have had a huge hole to fill at the corner position, and they simply have not yet.

It seemed that Chekwa could have been a valuable part of the Patriot’s secondary until he was released this morning. In four years with the Oakland Raiders, the cornerback from Ohio State has totaled 44 tackles in 32 games, including 19 tackles in 2013 in 15 days. Although he has yet to have an interception in his young career, Chekwa showed promise in Oakland and seemed ready for more playing time. However, he won’t get it in New England. Hopefully New England wakes up and bolsters their secondary before it’s too late.

Now, some encouraging news.

Well, look who came crawling back!! It was announced by NFL reporter Ian Rappaport that linebacker Brandon Spikes has returned to Foxboro for a second stint with the Patriots. Spikes spent four years in New England before heading to Buffalo for a year. He signed a one-year deal today.

This is a pretty sweet move. It is good for both team too; Spikes would not be able to flourish in Rex Ryan’s 3-4 defense in Buffalo. Now, Spikes is back home (even though he often trashed the Patriots on twitter while with the Bills. We’ll look past it Brandon), where he can cause havoc with Jerod Mayo and Dont’a Hightower. Spikes is a tackling machine and he must be itching to get back to New England and actually win football games.

So, one good move at linebacker, one confusing move in the secondary. I won’t be happy until the Patriots have a solid corner to contain the league’s top wide receivers (FYI we play Odell Beckham and the Giants this year so we need a cornerback STAT), so it better happen soon.
